End of the Edison Era?

Last class, we talked about the lightbulb and how revolutionary it was - even Marshall McLuhan talked about it being a medium, using it to illustrate his point that the medium is the message. But we also talked about in last class how we seem to be growing away from Edison's lightbulb and more toward the compact fluorescent lamp. I wanted to explore that a little more, since I'm still living in the "dark ages" apparently with my Edison light bulbs, and I found this really interesting article: The End of the Light Bulb. Apparently in 2007, Congress passed the Clean Energy Act which stated that Edison's lightbulb is supposed to be phased out starting in 2012! Apparently I wasn't alone in not knowing though because it said that 78% of Americans weren't aware either. The article talks about the benefits (mostly environmental) of these CFLs and the cons that are going to come with it. Kind of makes you think though, a. when we stop using Edison's most famous invention, will he become less significant? b. what will be the next replacement?
