shave and a haircut, 2 bits

What a genius way to come up with a currency! Who would of thought to break something in half to create change out of it until you cant break it anymore. And more often than not, that number was 8. Why that number? In class yesterday we discussed how important the number 8 is. When you flip it on its side it means infinity, it is the number of the restful day, the first cubic number, its used 73 times in the Bible, but most important, there are 8 bits in a BYTE!..weird.
The byte is a unit of digital information in computing and telecommunications that most commonly consists of eight bits, according to Wikipedia. As we learned in class, the standard of eight bits is a convenient power of two permitting the values 0 through 255 for one byte.
I also had a question up for anyone to answer..can someone please explain to me what Claude Shannon's diagram means?
